Show Spoiler

A reimagining of the popular 1970s TV series about a female athlete who is given bionic strength.
When somebody came up with the idea of resurrecting "Bionic Woman" from her television grave for the brain-dead 2007 audience, somebody just shook their head with a slight "uh-huh." After all, Lindsay Wagner made the part of Jamie Sommers famous back in the '70s, with "Bionic Woman" being a spin-off of the highly successful "The Six Million Dollar Man."

But this new, 21st-century "Bionic Woman," airing this fall on Wednesday nights on NBC, is not better than the '70s original, just different. "Bionic Woman," today's version, is a darker and edgier "BW," also a bigger and louder "BW," one that overall remains faithful to today's standards of dark sci-fi entertainment (kind of like James Cameron's "Dark Angel" from a few years back). The new show takes a little dash or two of "Blade Runner" and "The Terminator," and gives it a modern-day 2007 glossiness that guarantees that no one will be snoozing during this jazzed-up "Bionic Woman."

Sommers (now played with plenty of pluck by the gorgeous, piercing-blue-eyed British newcomer Michelle Ryan) is a younger, less sunny, and more formidable presence. And Ryan is pretty tough too, in addition to being a gorgeous, blue-eyed beauty. So she is understandably aghast when she awakes in a hospital bed after a car she was riding in had been pulverized by a 10-ton semi-truck. Now that her physical being has been enhanced with state-of-the-art prosthetics - one arm, one ear and both legs, to be exact, as well as some tinkered-up thought processes - she finds herself able to run like the wind through the woods and leap from rooftop to rooftop in the city.

There are times early on when "Bionic Woman" begins to resemble "Alias" and "La Femme Nikita," but this project soon gains its own momentum after a jumpy start when Sommers, after undergoing some training that allows her to see the virtues of her new, bionic-enhanced lot in life, learns she's the latest guinea pig in a top-secret government-funded program to have bionic-enhanced females out in the field nabbing all manner of would-be world-dominating baddies in a series of "Mission: Impossible"-inspired adventures. Jonas (Miguel Ferrer) is the Mr. Big in charge of this $50 million bionic transformation project, who watches over Jamie with the gruff benevolence of a father figure.

More so, "Bionic Woman" better establishes its own identity by giving its lead heroine a personal life outside of saving the world. In remaining faithful to certain comic book lore, Jaime Sommers has a cute kid sister named Becca (Lucy Hale) that she has to take care of, after their mom died and their father pulled a vanishing act. In the process, Sommers has to juggle being a super-heroine, keeping that a secret, of course, and being a big sister and positive role model to Becca - thus giving "Bionic Woman" a workable premise that keeps its lead from being a one-dimensional stereotype.

I've already stated that "Bionic Woman" got off to a pretty rough start, which is why I've waited until after six episodes to render any sort of intelligent judgment upon it. The show has a kind of edginess that should make it appealing to people who like this type of sci-fi/action stuff. The show boasts movie-quality special effects and frenetic camera-work during the action scenes that's sure to keep you awake. Of course, problems arise from the mediocre to sometimes uneven writing, disjointed storytelling, performances that are mostly average, and underdeveloped characters. Believe it or not, I really like Jaime's relationship with Becca, and I do kind of wish that the series would slow down a bit to focus on their attempts to be a family (which would give "Bionic Woman" some much-needed dramatic elements and make their relationship more two-dimensional). And the manic camera-work during the action scenes sometimes tends to take away from the action.

What's sure to keep you watching, however, is the energy and dynamic footwork of Michelle Ryan. Sporting her best American accent (she was recently given a chance to go British on us), Ryan is the new Jaime Sommers, someone that those longing for more sexy, a**-kicking females can look up to. She can win as many hearts and minds as Lindsay Wagner back in the '70s with the original show, but for today's 2007 fans - I think they've found their new super-heroine.

7/10
I had high hopes, being a fan of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series but the "Bionic Woman" series premiere was something of a disappointment.

I can live with recycled story lines. I can also deal with the pedestrian plot. This episode was just poorly spliced together with little to no transition from one scene to the next. One gets the impression that the premiere had been intended to run during a 90-120 minute time slot but was seriously over edited and cut down to 43 minutes. What results is basically little more than an extended trailer with very little character development.

This strategy is unfortunate because there are interesting characters with which to work here. The strained relationship between Jaime Sommers (played by English actress Michelle Ryan) and her live-in teenage sister is a bit of an overdone cliché (can you say Party of Five, Buffy the Vampire Slayer?), however I like the possibilities to explore some of the secondary characters. I want to know more about Miguel Ferrer's character as a shady project leader. I am interested in finding out about the story behind Will Andros - Jaime's love interest - and his seemingly villainous brother Anthony. Will Yun Lee's character also has potential.

If I were to describe the series premiere in two words, it would be "missed opportunity". Hopefully this is just a case of overzealous film editors overdoing it in the cutting room; the first episodes of many series start off a bit shaky compared to the series as a whole. There is some decent parts with this cast and a storyline with an opportunity to create some intriguing plot twists. I can only hope that the creators of the show put all these parts and create a decent show.
